Ask Linda #1781-Ground under repair (GUR) questions

Hi Linda,
I have two questions.
1. If your ball finishes in GUR can you clean your ball before taking relief?
2. Do you have to take full relief from the GUR whether it is compulsory GUR or not compulsory GUR?
Thank you,
Lulu from Sunshine Coast, Australia

Dear Lulu,

1. Yes. You may clean your ball whenever you take relief from any abnormal ground condition, which includes ground under repair [Rule 25-1b].

2. Taking relief from GUR is optional; Rule 25-1b states that “a player may take relief.” If the player chooses to take relief, she must take complete relief from the GUR. Note that each Committee has the power to adopt a Local Rule stating that play is prohibited from a specific area of GUR. If such a Local Rule is in force, taking relief from that named GUR is compulsory and complete relief must be taken. Relief from GUR is a free drop within one club-length and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief outside the GUR [Rule 25-1b].
