Ask Linda #1334-Drop a ball from higher than shoulder height

Hi Linda,

May a player drop a ball holding it above the shoulder height?

Thank you very much for your answer.
Lou from Argentina

Dear Lou,

No. When a player is required to drop a ball, he must stand erect and drop the ball from shoulder height with his arm held out straight. The arm will be parallel to the ground, and the elbow will be straight. Any variation (bent knees, bent elbow, bent waist, arm held higher or lower than shoulder height) results in a one-stroke penalty [Rule 20-2a].

If the player drops incorrectly, and he has not yet hit the ball, he will avoid penalty if he re-drops correctly [Rule 20-6].
