Ask Linda #574-Knock down leaves on practice swing

Linda,
In match play, one of the golfers hit leaves on a tree on her practice swing. Is that a penalty?
Lulu from San Diego, California

Dear Lulu,

If she knocks down a few, and more remain that will interfere with her swing, there is no penalty. If there are only a few, and she knocks them all down, there will be a loss-of-hole penalty (two-stroke penalty in stroke play) for improving the area of her intended swing [Rule 13-2; Decision 13-2/0.5].

The point here is that she is only penalized if she has removed the leaves that will interfere with her swing.
