Ask Linda-Another question about Tiger’s drop

Linda,

I had the same question about dropping in the divot hole that was just made [Much ado about Tiger, posted April 17]. A player doesn't have to do that to comply with Rule 26-1a, I hope.

Thank you!
Lulu

Dear Lulu,

When a player chooses to drop her ball at the spot where the previous stroke was made, and that spot has been identified by the divot she made with that previous stroke, the player may drop the ball immediately behind the divot hole [Decision 20-2c/1.5].

If the player happened to repair the divot after her shot, but before she knew she would be returning to that spot to hit another ball, there would be no penalty for improving the area in which a ball will be dropped [Decision 13-2/4.5].
