Ask Linda #642-Remove loose impediments on green

Linda, if you are chipping or putting from off the green can you remove pebbles and sand and leaves etc. from your line that are on the green?
Lou from California

Dear Lou,

Yes. You are always permitted to remove loose impediments [Rule 23-1]. Sand, however, is a special case; it is only considered to be a loose impediment on the green. You may brush it out of your line if it is on the green; you may not touch it elsewhere (unless your ball is at rest when another player’s shot dumps sand on or around your ball. In such a case you may remove the sand, because you are always entitled to the lie that your shot gave you.)
