Ask Linda #877-Ball embedded in dung

Dear Linda,

Yuk! Ball in bunker fully embedded in fox poo! Can I take relief?

Lou from England

Dear Lou,

No relief, Lou. You’re going to have to ignore the yuck factor and play the ball as it lies.

Dung that adheres to the ball is not a loose impediment [Definition of “Loose Impediment”]. A player would not get relief for a ball embedded in dung anywhere on the golf course. If the dung does not adhere to the ball, it is a loose impediment, and the player may carefully brush it away if his ball lies through the green. There is no relief from dung in a bunker, regardless of whether it adheres to the ball, since a player is not permitted to touch or move a loose impediment in a bunker [Rule 13-4c].
