Ask Linda #874-Follow-up question to Ask Linda #723

Dear Linda,

In your #723 post, you mentioned:
"When you take free relief (e.g., immovable obstruction, ground under repair), you should use the club you would use to hit your next shot to establish your stance at the nearest point of relief."

If, after making a legitimate drop, the player then proceeded to hit with a different club than the one which was earlier used to establish the nearest point of relief, would there be any penalty?

Thank you.
Lou from Malaysia

Dear Lou,

No. After the player drops his ball, conditions may be such that he will want to hit his next shot with a different club. That is permissible under the Rules [Decision 24-2b/4].
