Ask Linda #847a-Raking footprints improves partner’s stance

Linda, what if the person who hit the ball did the raking [Ask Linda #847]? Before the partner took their stance. Then there would be no two-stroke penalty. Correct?
Lulu

Dear Lulu,

Seriously? Do you think the Rules would allow a player’s partner to breach a Rule on her behalf to avoid a penalty? Not in this game!

Rule 30-3f states that if a player breaches a Rule that assists her partner’s play, the partner incurs the penalty. Whether the player rakes the sand after her shot or the partner rakes it before her shot, the partner’s stance has been improved by the raking and the partner incurs the two-stroke penalty for a breach of Rule 13-2.
