Ask Linda #668-Player hits another’s ball into hazard

Linda, following up on Ask Linda #617-Player hits another’s ball, what if the ball that player A hits [Player B’s ball] ends up in a water hazard, and Player B, upon reaching what he assumes is his ball, discovers it is Player A's ball. Can it be assumed that Player A hit Player B's ball?  Assuming that both balls were in the same general area.
Lou

Dear Lou,

Yes.

If there is sufficient evidence that Player A has hit Player B’s ball into a hazard, you may assume that the ball in the water belonged to Player B. Player B will place another ball on the spot from which Player A played Player B’s ball, and Player B will incur no penalty [Decision 15-3b/1].
