A brief note about the 2019 Rules

Dear readers,

As I mentioned in an earlier column, the Definitions are a must read to understand the new Rules. Therefore, I will review the Definitions before I talk about the Rules themselves.

I will begin a three-part tour through the new Definitions shortly after Thanksgiving, discussing new terminology, old terminology with altered definitions, and whatever new information strikes me as essential for you. I will not cover every last piece of information nor every Definition; it is not my intention to rewrite the rulebook. Think of this as a heads up on the important stuff. If you want to know about everything –and I’m hoping you do– read the rulebook. If you have not yet purchased one, you will find them available online at the websites of the USGA, R&A, and Golf Canada. The new Rules are also available as a free download to Apple and Android devices.

Sometime after you have had time to digest the new Definitions, I will start explaining the actual new Rules for 2019.

Please remember that I will not answer questions about the new Rules until sometime after I attend the USGA Rules of Golf workshop in mid-January. Nor will I be able to answer questions related to any Ask Linda columns you receive between now and the workshop.

Happy holidays,
Linda
