Ask Linda #655-Deer hoof imprints on green

Linda, we have many deer on our course. I have been reading primarily thru Rule 16 but can't find if hoof imprints on the green would fall under abnormal ground and therefore if one could take relief or repair on the green. Thanks and everyday I look forward to your answers...Lou from Texas

Dear Lou,

You are only permitted to repair old hole plugs or damage caused by the impact of a ball (ball marks). Damage caused by deer cavorting on the green may be repaired before you putt only if it’s not on anyone’s line of putt [Rule 16-1c]. You may repair any damage to the green after everyone has putted, and I would encourage you to do so.
