Ask Linda #626-Resolve match play dispute

Linda,

I hope you had a great holiday! We love your blog; it is always settling rules issues for us. We have one that we cannot quite get a handle on. Maybe you can help.

While playing the18th hole, one of our guys said he was in a washout and another said it was not. The one who made the claim said that he would play two balls and then ask the Pro. I believe that in Match Play this is not an option, but I am not quite sure what the correct procedure is when there is a disagreement in Match Play. Can you help?

Thanks,
Lou

Dear Lou,

You are correct in thinking that there is no option to play a second ball in match play, Lou. The two players should discuss the situation. If they can come to an agreement on how to proceed, there is no problem. If they cannot agree, the player should follow the procedure he believes is correct. His opponent may file a claim if he disagrees. The opponent must tell the player that he is filing a claim; he must do so before any player tees off on the next hole [Rule 2-5].
