Linda, could you please tell me how to score when playing
four-ball (better ball) and there is one member without a partner?
I was told that you play (the person without the partner)
Stableford and then when you come in they (the committee) take someone's
score card from the pack (of those who have played) and then you pick A or B
and that is your partner, and then you put the cards together and take the best
score of each hole, either yours or the person who you are scoring
with. Please, is this correct?
Lulu from Australia
Dear Lulu,
In both four-ball match play and stroke play, a side (team)
may be represented by either partner for all or any part of the round. In other
words, if one partner does not show up, the other partner may play the entire
round by herself. If her partner arrives late, she may join her partner at the
start of a new hole [Rules 30-3a and 31-2].
A single player will compete under the same format as everyone else in the tournament. If the format is
Stableford, she will play Stableford; if it is a straight four-ball (better
ball) format, she will play the same and must hole out at each hole. There is
no option for a single player to play a Stableford when no one else is doing so.
A blind draw may not be used to find a partner for a single
player in a four-ball tournament that is being played under the Rules of Golf.
