Dear Lulu,
The Rules of Golf do not require a player to use the same color,
brand, or type of golf ball throughout a round. You may play a white Callaway
on the first hole, a red Top Flight on the second, a yellow Titleist on the
third, and a pink Precept on the fourth.
However, you may someday find yourself playing in a
tournament where the Committee adopts as one of the Conditions of the
Competition what is known as the “one ball condition.” This condition requires
that players use the same brand and model of ball throughout the round. In such
a tournament, the penalty for using a different ball is two strokes per hole, maximum
four strokes per round. (In match play, the status of the match would be
adjusted by deducting one hole per violation, maximum two holes per round.)
When a player is discovered using the wrong brand or model ball, he must resume
using the correct ball on the next tee or he will be disqualified [Appendix I,
Part C: Conditions of the Competition, #1c].
Balls of the same brand and model are listed on the USGA
List of Conforming Golf Balls. Different colored balls are listed as separate
entries, and are considered not to be the same ball. Therefore, if you begin
your round using a white ball in a tournament where the One Ball Condition is
in effect, you must play the whole round with white balls of the same make and
model.
