Ask Linda #485-Practice putt moves ball

Linda,
When a player is practicing their putting stroke and they accidentally hit the ball, what are the consequences?
I was playing with a 13 handicapper and she hit her ball during her practice stroke. She just replaced the ball without counting a penalty stroke. I thought that it would be a 1-stroke penalty even though she replaced it. Please let me know the rule.
Thank you,
Lulu

Dear Lulu,

Your thought was correct. When a player accidentally moves her ball while taking a practice stroke (putting or otherwise), she incurs a one-stroke penalty and she must replace her ball [Rule 18-2a].
