Ask Linda #473-Ball moved OB by another ball

Hi Linda!

First of all, love your website. I do a weekly newsletter for our ladies golf club and it provides information that is understandable!

Here's my question:

A lady hits her ball in the fairway. Second lady hits her shot and her ball hits the 1st ball. The 1st ball moves forward and closer to the green, the second ball ricochets off and ends up out of bounds. I need a ruling please.

I THINK - the first ball should be replaced closest to the place that can be identified as the original position. My reference is definition of “outside agency.” Then, I think the second ball is considered out of bounds and that ball has to be re-hit under the out of bounds rule 27-1-b - stroke and distance.

I ALWAYS want to be able to refer to a rule or definition.  I have much to learn!

Thanks again,
 Lulu from Frankfort, Kentucky

Dear Lulu,

Your guess on how to proceed is correct, Lulu. Good job!

Rule 18-5 tells you that when your ball at rest is moved by another player’s ball in motion, you must replace your ball.

Rule 19-5a tells you that if your ball in motion is deflected by another player’s ball at rest, you must play your ball as it lies.

Since the ball that was in motion was deflected out of bounds, the ball is officially out of bounds and you must play a ball under stroke and distance [Rule 27-1]. This means you count your original stroke, add a one-stroke penalty for hitting the ball out of bounds, and hit your next stroke from the place you hit your previous shot.
