Ask Linda #926-Hit fellow competitor’s ball OB

Linda, in a friendly round, player A hit his second shot obviously out of bounds. He immediately dropped another ball, hit, and assumed he was then lying 4. At that point player B advised him he had hit B's ball. Is this just 2 strokes for hitting a wrong ball or is there an additional penalty? Thanks, look forward to your reports everyday.

Lou from Texas

Dear Lou,

Player A is penalized two strokes for hitting the wrong ball. There is no additional penalty for hitting the wrong ball out of bounds, since strokes made while playing a wrong ball do not count in his score [Rule 15-3b]. Count his tee shot and the two-stroke penalty. When he finds his ball, the next stroke will be his fourth shot on the hole.

Player B must place a ball on the spot where Player A hit it. “A ball” means “any ball.” He does not have to retrieve his original ball (the one Player A hit OB) before playing his next shot.
