Linda, regarding Ask Linda #601 (Putt strikes flagstick off green), once the ball is in motion, I thought you could not move
anything on the player’s line that may interfere with their shot.
Lou from the UK
Dear Lou,
Generally speaking, you are not permitted to move an
obstruction that is on your line of play or putt when your ball is in motion.
There are two exceptions to this Rule [24-1b]:
When a ball is in motion…
1. You may move equipment belonging to any player.
2. You may move the flagstick if it is attended, removed, or
held up.
If the flagstick is in the hole and unattended, no one may hustle over and pull it out if a player’s
ball in motion might hit it. However, if someone has laid the flagstick on the
ground (on or off the green), and it appears that a ball in motion may hit it,
anyone may pick it up out of the way.
