"When you take free relief (e.g., immovable
obstruction, ground under repair), you should use the club you would use to hit
your next shot to establish your stance at the nearest point of relief."
If, after making a legitimate drop, the player then
proceeded to hit with a different club than the one which was earlier used to
establish the nearest point of relief, would there be any penalty?

Dear Lou,
No. After the player drops his ball, conditions may be such
that he will want to hit his next shot with a different club. That is
permissible under the Rules [Decision 24-2b/4].
