Linda,
On a Friday morning at our club a large group of seniors
plays a round of golf. They have their own handicap system, including losing a
stroke if they get a two. Some players in the group are playing off a handicap
of 38!!
My question is can a group of players create their own
handicap system whilst playing within the rules of golf, or must all rounds be
bound by the official handicap system? My partners and I would like to play
with this group but feel this handicap system they use is ridiculous.
Thanks,
Lou from Canada
Dear Lou,
Handicap systems are not governed by the Rules of Golf. You and
your partners are going to have to decide how much ridiculousness you can
tolerate.
It is not unusual for a group to create its own handicap
system for its own use. In my experience, such systems are rarely an
improvement over the official system, and are often chock full of absurdities.
I sincerely hope this group you plan to join observes the
Rules of Golf.
Linda
